With a wide range of subjects including gender-based assumptions made by algorithms, the place of the digital humanities within art history, and data-based methods for exhuming forgotten histories, it assembles a who’s who of the field in more than thirty impactful essays. The real origin of that term [digital humanities] was in conversation with Andrew McNeillie, the original acquiring editor for the Blackwell Companion to Digital Humanities. We started talking with him about that book project in 2001, in April, and by the end of November we’d lined up contributors and were discussing the title, for the contract. Debates in the Digital Humanities brings together leading figures in the field to explore its theories, methods, and practices and to clarify its multiple possibilities and tensions. Together, the essays suggest that the digital humanities is uniquely positioned to contribute to the revival of the humanities and academic life. Debates in the Digital Humanities 2019 collects a broad array of important, thought-provoking perspectives on the field’s many sides.
